In this issue, the member spotlight submission is from DeSha Kalmar, Director of Human Resources for the City of Lake Forest, IPELRA Board Member, and Training Committee Chair.
When asked to complete the member spotlight, DeSha chose the question: What lessons have you learned in your career that have made you successful?
Always treat people with dignity and respect, even - especially - when you are bringing bad news or dealing with negative situations.
Be honest, trustworthy and fair. It's amazing the level of trust and respect employees will have in you if they view you as being this way.
Be a good listener. This includes EQ (emotional intelligence) skills. Pay attention to body language, affects and other non-verbal cues even more than the words.
Everyone has something of value to offer. Sometimes you just have to look hard to find it.
Be patient and open-minded. Don't be afraid to listen to ideas and try new things.
Find a good mentor - someone you want to emulate. Become a mentor to others.
Embrace lifelong learning and continue to challenge yourself and those around you. IPELRA is a great partner for this.
Most importantly, always remember the importance of laughter and fun in the workplace!
